5 out of 5 stars Excellent BP Monitor   July 12, 2010

The HEM-790IT is a well built and designed blood pressure device with lots of capabilities. It is obvious the design engineers put a lot of thought into the development of this unit. The display is well laid out and the numbers are large so you don't need glasses to read it. The unit comes with a 'stiff' cuff and an USB cable to transfer data from the 790IT to your computer. Some have commented that the BP Health Management software that comes with the unit is not supported in Windows 7. However, it installed and is running ok on my PC which is running Windows 7 (64 bit).

Included in the unit is several nice functions such as it takes 3 readings and then averages out to get a more accurate reading. I use this exclusively. There was one read session that had large variations in the 3 readings which I didn't understand. For example I got systolic readings of 124, 117, and 104 that were taken at 1 minute intervals. Is this accurate or is this a bogus read? However, most reads were consistent like 115, 112, and 111. This makes more sense but then again there have been many discussions about how one BP reading can affect the next reading so the one anomaly may have been valid. Anyway the 790IT seems to follow the expected patterns of higher BP readings in the morning and lower in the evening and over a long period of time the average readings were consistent with each other. On one read I was in a hurry to go somewhere so I didn't take the time to relax before I took the read. This resulted in a much higher reading which is what I would have expected.

All measurements are stored in non-volatile memory. You can read the averages for several weeks of stored data, read only the morning BP data, or read only the evening BP data. You can take mid day readings also. After taking 3 readings for a particular session the display shows the average. Pressing the reset button will toggle you through the individual readings that were taken and used for the averaging. Your heart rate is also shown. The unit is very flexible and it even has a warning if the heart rate is irregular.

What I like about electronic monitors versus those used at the doctor's office (which I also own) is taking readings will always give consistent numbers as the electronic circuits are very accurate in using identical measurement levels for each read. So tracking your BP will be consistent and show you the trends you are looking for. I have had quite dissimilar readings at the doctor's office taken by the nurse then by the doctor so this method can be dependent on the person taking the readings.

Transferring the data from the 790IT unit to your PC is very simple. Open up the Health Management program on your PC then plug the USB cable into the 790IT (power does not have to be 'ON'). Click on the "Download Data" button and specify which user the data should be associated with and that is it. The Health Management program is easy to use and provides several options for viewing the data. It is one of those programs that you don't need to pour through manuals in order to use it. Everything is obvious.

The 790IT can be operated standalone with batteries or it comes with a wall plug-in power pack. Finally the unit comes in a very nice carrying case in the event you want to take it during your travels.

When taking BP measurements I have found that using the controlled breathing techniques (i.e., 6 slow, deep breaths per minute) for about 2 minutes before and during the measurement sessions gives low and consistent blood pressure measurements. I also noticed this at the doctor's office so I have bought into this system of helping to lower blood pressure.

All in all I like and highly recommend this unit. So far no negatives.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Blood Pressure Monitor - accurate   July 11, 2010

We bought this blood pressure cuff after the one we had for several years (by another manufacturer) had started giving us inaccurate readings. We already used the Omron Pedometer with the software, so decided to purchase this monitor so we could track our blood pressures over time and compare with the amount of steps we take with the pedometer.

The software is a little basic - but it has worked out great for us. My husband has been able to create reports to bring to his cardiologist, and I plan on bringing both pedometer and blood pressure readings to my endocrinologist. It is fun to use this as a way to stay on top of our health issues.

The readings have been accurate - within a few points of the Doctor's blood pressure cuffs. I highly recommend this cuff and am happy with my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars High BP Must Have!!   July 11, 2010

This unit is great! It was a touch tricky to figure out the set-up, but it works great, very accurate and the software interface is really helpful (and the doctors love the print outs). I even ordered one for both my parents! Highly recommend!!

3 out of 5 stars Without accuracy, it's worth little   July 8, 2010

I purchased this unit over two weeks ago and have taken over 200 readings with it. It fluctuates sometimes extremely, though this can be compensated by observing the average reading over time.
However, I took the unit to my doctors office where I'm being treated for hypertension and the nurse took a reading using a traditonal cuff and stethoscope method, got her reading, then I used the machine being careful to do so exactly as directed. I took a second reading after a few minutes. Then a few minutes after that, the nurse took her second reading.

Her results were within less than 10 points of each other, as they would be expected to be.

My results with the 790IT ranged from 177 to 153 to 165 for systolic readings. And within a minute or two of the nurses readings.

Her readings? Around 143 over 87. The Omron unit gave readings 30 points higher on both systolic and diastolic readings.

I was very dissappointed to find that this unit is clearly inaccurate.

Not only that but I used it on a friend who is a nurse and is well aware of her blood pressure, and it gave a reading that was about 20 points high for her as well.

The bottom line is this. If an instrument is like this is that inaccurate, really, what is it worth? It serves no purpose whatsoever if it isn't at least very close to accurate.

Now I'm faced with trying to figure out how to exchange the unit and crossing my fingers that IF I am able to do so, the next unit will be accurate... or at least close.

The cuff also present difficulty. I have normal size arms, but the cuff barely fits between my armpit and elbow. It's literally impossible to leave the half inch gap above the elbow that it recommends.

The cuff is also very sensitive to where it's aligned on your arm. If the blue line is over your bicep, it will give readings in one range, and if you rotate it even an inch to the inside of your bicep over the brachial artery, it will give readings in an entirely different range. Very tricky.

4 out of 5 stars Nice unit   July 7, 2010

The unit itself is good quality. Seems to work well.

One note, the software is not compatible with windows 7 so beware. Works fine on older OS.
