I gave this a 2 start rating becuase, duh, I didn't like it. I have read all the Sookie Stackhouse novels and this one didn't seem to click with me at all. Horrible ending. I just can't believe the book ended like that. I mean really, what are we, like 10? I will not give spoilers, but let's just say it's almost a Disney princess ending. I am not a book snob by any means, but I just wanted to give a heads up to all the readers out there to watch out for a horrible finish to a mediocre book. That being said, I recommend reading the previous Stackhouse novels becuase they were are good reads in my opinion.

I just wanted to get on the 3 star band wagon. Charlaine is so much better than this effort. I will buy the next chapter, but not the one after, if it's more of the same.

i typically love these books and know for the most part they are a light read but this book was a let down...it seemed like a really long chapter. i hope there is another book in the making. i must say i will always be a fan and love sookie stackhouse...looking forward to the next installment.

I love the Sookie Stackhouse series. Charlaine Harris is my favorite author; however, Dead in the Family was an extreme disappointment. Somehow the story flat-lines. Unlike the other books, something is missing.
Now that Sookie is with Eric their relationship has become somewhat humdrum. Harris creates no memorable scenes between these two characters. We all remember Book four's shower scene between Sookie and Eric. We remember Book One's cemetery scene with Bill and Sookie. Readers expect romance involving vampires to be passionate and fiery. There are no such scenes in "Dead in the Family."
There seems to be no active contender against Eric for Sookie's love. Sookie as a female protagonist is still a strong character. She has become a lot edgier after being tortured by the fairies. There were a lot of minor characters that seemed unnecessary like Kennedy and Danny. There wasn't enough character development with Judith and Ocella. Season characters like Sam, Bill, and Jason didn't shine in this book. Claude, the gay Fairy, is an extremely bland character who is neither lovable nor humorous. The incorporation of Hunter seemed more like filler material that an integral element. "Dead in the family" touched very little on Vampire politics and just moderately more on werewolf politics. Of course it wouldn't be a Charlaine Harris story without the standard mysteries like the dead body found in yard and the unidentified fairy. The climax of the book is when the little Romanov vampire Alexei goes insane and attacks everyone, including the unidentified fairy. This would hardly be climactic when compared to vampire wars, werewolf and witch wars, fairy Wars, and bombings from the Fellowship of the Sun.
Will the next book delve into the politics with the Vegas vampires? Will the Fellowship of the Sun start attacking shifters and Weres? Maybe Charlaine Harris is running out of material and will have to incorporate more supernatural creatures like fallen angels, demons, or ghosts which are becoming popular topics for young adult literature. Much inspiration can already be drawn from the unpredictable nature of vampires, werewolves, and crazy religious humans.
Please let the next book be better than this.
